Before "Revenge," there was "Vingança"

As we not-so patiently wait for Diogo's episode of "Revenge" on September 29th, I thought we could continue our look back at his previous "revenge" series, "Vingança."  In this 2007 series that was inspired by the classic novel "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas, Diogo played "Santiago Medina."

So in light of the recent, awesome news that Diogo will be guest starring on the season premiere of ABC's hit drama "Revenge," I thought we could take a look back at the last time Diogo appeared on a series seeking revenge.  Of course, I am referring to SIC TV's 2007 series "Vingança" where Diogo played "Santiago."

Specifically, today's "Clip of the Day" comes from a behind the scenes interview Diogo did to try to talk about his character, Santiago, but as you will see, the reporter had other plans.  :)  Our dear friend Lou da Gama was kind enough to translate this fun interview for us, found right below the video.

Emmy chat

As we anxiously await for the Emmy nominations to be announced on Thursday morning, and root for Diogo, Darwin, the series and all involved with "The Bible," I thought it might be neat to take a look back at when Diogo, along with his fellow cast and crew of "Laços de Sangue" ("Blood Ties"), won an International Emmy in 2011 for "Best Telenovela."

So, today's "Clip of the Day" comes from November 2011, when Diogo, his co-star Diana Chaves, and SIC network's general director Luís Marques appeared on SIC TV to discuss their very recent Emmy win.  Our ever amazing friend Lou da Gama translated Diogo's parts of the interview for us, which, (with time marks) can be found below the video.

More TMN commercials with Diogo on the way!

Good news!  It looks like we'll be seeing quite a bit more of Diogo and friends in future TMN commercials this summer!  According to the Portuguese publication "Meios e Publicidade" ("Media and Advertising") the first commercial that debuted yesterday was just the beginning. The article says the TMN campaign, whose slogan is "there are things you'll want to tell everyone," stars "Diogo Morgado as 'Diogo,' a nostalgic, modern bar owner of Malhão Beach Bar, who returns this summer to the beach and decides to invite his old friends, adults now, to return to the beach of their childhood and rebuild the bar that gave them so many summer memories.”

Furthermore, Portuguese publication Marketeer says the commercial is actually the first of five TV ads TMN will run, as a "series" called "Internet Open Bar."  The official statement from TMN said of the series of commercials: "In this environment they will spend a summer with many adventures, starring different characters ... As in every group of friends, there is a geek who spends his time in the shadows glued to the phone checking e-mails, the cute girl who breaks hearts all summer, the girl who "seems spaced-out" but only makes blunders and plays tricks, the dodgy friend who is the “tanned hot guy” of the beach -- who is always bugging others with ideas and will find himself caught up in a joke among the friends and, of course, Diogo, the bar owner."

Diogo to appear in new ad campaign in Portugal

TMN, a Portuguese mobile phone company, announced this week that Diogo will be the "face" of their upcoming ad campaign.  The campaign is expected to include a commercial and print ads, launching sometime this weekend or week.  

I will post the video and images of the ads as soon as I get them.  But, and I could be wrong, but I think this may have been what Diogo was filming when was tweeting and sharing pictures of filming last weekend, including this picture he shared, saying: "Shooting at the beach. Costa Vicentina Rules!!!"

We shall see.... In the meantime, take a look at this video about another ad campaign Diogo participated in back in 2010 for "Boa Estética" clinics. (A translation, thanks to the ever amazing Lou da Gama, is below the video.)

Drive Time

Last time, we took a look at Diogo turning the tables and being the host/interviewer.  Today we will again see Diogo in the driver's seat -- this time, literally.

Today's "Clip of the Day" comes from 2011, when Diogo appeared on the automotive show called "Volante" ("Steering Wheel.")  Similar to the BBC's hit series "Top Gear," for this episode, Diogo was the celebrity guest asked to drive the "mystery car."  The incredible Lou da Gama kindly translated this fun segment for us, found right below the video, and includes the time marks for Diogo's parts on the show.

Turning the Tables

So, we've seen many clips of Diogo being interviewed by a TV host, including yesterday's post of him on a late-night talk show.   But I thought it might be fun to turn the tables, and show a clip where Diogo IS the host, and gets to do the interviewing for a change.....

To that effect, today's "Clip of the Day" comes from June 2009 when Diogo hosted the live TV special "Gala Amor de Verão" ("Summer of Love Gala.")  This variety show style program on SIC featured various acts and entertainers as a kick off to summer.  You may recall Diogo spoke of hosting this show in his "Episódio Directo," saying of it, "I had contact with the audience, that was a challenge, and I had lots of friends who sang there, so I did it with pleasure, It was great."  

So here's a glimpse of "host"/interviewer Diogo from "Amor de Verão," and the ever amazing Lou da Gama translated this fun clip for us, found below the video.

Diogo on "5 Para Meia-Noite" - a Clip of the Day

Today's "Clip of the Day" comes from 2009, when Diogo was a guest on RTP's late-night talk show, "5 Para Meia-Noite," ("5 to Midnight") this time with host Filomena Cautela.  Specifically, it's a clip from a segment they do on the show called "Hero or Villain" where the guest, in this case Diogo, is shown pictures of two people/things, and must say which is the hero, and which is the villain.  Our friend Lou da Gama was kind enough to translate this for us, and even though some of the choices are Portuguese references we may not know, it is still a fun clip that shows just what a good sport Diogo is with a great sense of humor.  You can find Lou's translation below the video.

The Making of a Scene

So, we all know Diogo is so talented that he makes every scene he is in look effortless.  But there is a lot that goes into every scene, even more so in filming a "special" scene, such as a "love" scene, or a chase/fight scene.  Since we really didn't get to see Diogo in those types of scenes in "The Bible," hee, I thought it might be interesting to see what has gone into the making of these unique scenes in the series he has done in the past.

Thus, today's "Clips of the Day" feature interviews with Diogo and a couple of his co-stars talking about what it takes to film these particular types of scenes.

First clip comes from 2010, when SIC's E-especial talked to Diogo and his co-star Sisley Dias ("Tiago") on the set of "Laços de Sangue" about an upcoming chase and fight scene they would be doing for the series.  Our friend Lou da Gama kindly translated the clip for us, found right below the video.

Say cheese!

Since yesterday's post was all about pictures of Diogo, I thought it might be cool if today's post was about Diogo stepping behind the lens to be the one TAKING pictures. 

So, today's "Clip of the Day" comes from July 2012, when Diogo appeared on the RTP1 show, “Cinco Sentidos” ("Five Senses") to discuss "Portugal, O Melhor Destino" ("Portugal, the Best Destination") a campaign for which he was an appointed "ambassador."  "Portugal, O Melhor Destino" was a nationwide project that asked all Portuguese to unite to show that Portugal is a prime tourist destination by taking and submitting pictures that showed their pride and patriotism.  

In just two months, the project gathered 77,053 images from nearly 15,000 people all around Portugal.  These images were then put together to create one of the biggest photo albums in the world.  Diogo was one of those proud Portuguese who submitted pictures for the photo album, which he discusses in the clip below.  Our friend Lou da Gama translated this fun interview that shows us yet another talent of Diogo's, and you can find that translation right below the video.

"Reporter: If you are proud to be Portuguese, then you just have to join the world's largest photo album. For this you just have to pick a camera and show why our country is the best destination. (to Diogo) You are an ambassador of this cause. You said yes right away (to the invitation), because you’re proud to be Portuguese.
DM: I’m proud. I’m very proud to be Portuguese. I think that what we lack is us having the notion that we are truly valuable, and good, and unique. And we are a people who are rare to find.
Reporter: I'm going to ask you to take some photographs to test your quality as a photographer. Can you?
DM: Okay! Do you want me to use this camera? This camera of low quality that you brought?
Reporter: This is weak! This is weak!
DM: It is. But I can use it. Come on! Give it to me! I'm entering the site essentially to understand the extent to which the campaign is reaching out to people, and obviously I will be curious about the comments that people will eventually make upon the photos that I take.
Reporter: You will also be able to vote. You can’t vote for yours, can you?
DM: I can’t? Why can’t I vote for my photographs? I will only vote for mine! I’m kidding.
Reporter: What do you like best to shoot?
DM: Look! I essentially enjoy photographing people. I love photographing faces and situations.
Reporter: Paparazzi!
DM: A little bit. Maybe I would be a perfect paparazzo. In this event, in this campaign, my participation is going to be a more active participation. I set out to do exactly that. I will travel from the north to the south of the country photographing the Portuguese people, which I think it is what we have to be proud of most… our Portuguese spirit." Diogo on the set of "Ambição" from "E-Especial" (May 2013)

SIC's E-especial recently visited Diogo on the set of his upcoming series, "Ambição," soon after he returned from the US, to chat with him about the success of "The "Bible" and playing "Jesus."  You can see the interview by clicking on the link below, and then go to the 18:23 mark to see a "blue-eyed" Diogo (for his character, "Eduardo" in the series.)  Our friend Lou Da Gama sent us a translation of the quick interview, along with some great screen caps from it, which you can find below the link to the video.

Diogo: "I felt very happy [for being chosen to play Jesus] but also scared and in a panic. It's a character of great responsibility. I don't consider it a character. It's a figure that belongs to many people. More than a privilege, it was a personal and unique adventure.

I don't know what the reaction here was [in Portugal]. I just heard it from my parents. In the US it was an explosion. Nobody was expecting it, the channel itself and the producers were not expecting that explosion and the reaction, which was really good, very positive.

For me, one of my biggest pleasures was to hear people like Oprah asking about Portugal and to tell them first hand what is Portugal, what it is to be Portuguese and what's going on here. I felt proud. I felt [like] a Rosa Mota, a Carlos Lopes [both Portuguese  runners who were winners at the Olympic Games], a Cristiano Ronaldo [a famous Portuguese soccer player] or a Mourinho [a famous Portuguese soccer coach.]  I swear I really felt that. It was something I wasn't expecting, to feel the responsibility of being almost an ambassador. Because from the moment you have people who are known worldwide asking about your country and you can say first hand what you truly feel, you know that every word you say will have a very different importance from what it would have if you were with a friend talking about the country. So, that responsibility was something that I embraced with both arms."

Happy Father's Day!

Even though it is technically not Father's Day in Portugal, (Father's Day is actually celebrated on St. Joseph's Day, March 19th, in Portugal) I still wanted to wish Diogo a very Happy Father's Day as we in the US celebrate it today.  And I also wanted to use "Father's Day" as the theme for today's "Clip of the Day."  So, today's clip comes from a 2010 interview with Diogo on the SIC Mulher show "Mundo das Mulheres," where he discussed being a father -- both onscreen and off.  

Our dynamic duo Liliana and Lou da Gama teamed up once again to translate this special, great interview for us, which can be found below the video/link.

"Episódio Directo" with Diogo (from 2009)

Still reeling from the excitement and appreciation for Diogo's amazing Q&A here on the blog, today's "Clip of the Day" stays with that theme... it comes from August, 2009 when SIC and E-Especial did a live broadcast online with Diogo called "Episódio Directo com Diogo Morgado" where he answered online questions from fans directly.  And our dear friends Liliana and Lou da Gama were both kind enough to translate a half hour each of this ONE HOUR "interview" for us, which you will find below the video/link.

Reporter (Margarida): Good afternoon everybody, welcome Diogo Morgado.
DM: Hi!
Reporter: Welcome to "Episódio Directo" [Live Episode], you know questions will pour…
DM: Yeahh rain is a good sign! I’m ready to get wet, let’s go!
Reporter: Right? Let’s go then… First question: - “I would like to know, as an actor, which character did you like to do the most. Hugs and cheers for your career, you are a great host too.”
DM: Thank you!! What’s his name?
Reporter: Miguel. 
DM: Miguel, honestly, for me… I love what I do. To me, work is everything and I think that the difficult parts are always the last ones. It’s the last thing you do. For what I’ve done, the most difficult is the last one, the one I am doing, now, there’s a sense of responsibility. We know what the people like, and that always adds to the difficulty level. I try to innovate always and that is difficult. Veeery difficult. Everything is invented, now!
Reporter: Miguel also thinks you are a great host. Have you thought leaving acting and turn into that?
DM: Noooo. No. No. No. No. 
Reporter: The ideal was for you to do both…?
DM: No. I say this and have no problem with that, I am not a host. Inside what a prototype host is, a person who is ready or hosting any kind of events, I am not a host. I am someone who likes to communicate with people, and that feels at ease hosting some things, some events and situations. I like almost everything that has to do with direct contact with the audience. The program “Da-lhe Gás” that I made here at SIC, had about 700 kids in the pavilions, and there was much shouting, a big mess, and I was the master of the game. For me that was kidding, not hosting, I was like the older brother, playing with them. The game becomes a tv program. So… thank you, I appreciate it, Miguel, but I do not see myself as a host. If I have to do and identify with the project… the last thing I hosted, and maybe that is what Miguel is talking about,   was “Amor de Verão” here at SIC, and I had contact with the audience, that was a challenge and I had lots of friends who sang there, so I did it with pleasure, It was great. 
Reporter: So Diogo Morgado is and will be an actor.
DM: I….. try to be! Yes!!

GQ Men of the Year Awards: The Video

Vogue Portugal posted the video below of the "GQ Men of the Year 2013 Awards," where Diogo was named Portugal's first GQ Man of the Year.

In the video Diogo says, "I feel profoundly proud, and more, I think that events like this by GQ show that Portugal is a little more than what Portugal thinks of itself."

Tonight, Diogo attended the "XVIII Gala dos Globos de Ouro," Portugal's Golden Globe Awards, where he and his "Laços de Sangue" co-star, Joana Santos, presented the award for "Best Actress in a Film."

Diogo on "5 Para A Meia-Noite" in 2011

Today's "Clip of the Day" comes from "5 Para A Meia-Noite" ("5 to Midnight") -- a late-night talk show that airs nightly on network RTP, with a different host each night. 

On this particular visit Diogo made to "5 Para A Meia-Noite" in August of 2011, the host was Nilton -- a humorist, writer, and actor -- and judging from some of their tweets, Nilton is also someone Diogo respects and likes quite a bit. :)

Keep that in mind as you watch this rather "tongue in cheek" uh, "interview."  Which, by the way, the ever awesome Lou da Gama kindly translated for us, and can be found right below the clip.

Clip of the Day -- Diogo on his "Biography"

Before he turned 30, Diogo had been working as an actor for nearly 15 years, appearing in over 30 TV, film, and theater projects.  So it is not surprising then that at just one month shy of his 29th birthday, a "Biography" of Diogo Morgado was done and aired in Portugal.

Today's "Clip of the Day" is an interview Diogo did talking about his "Biografia" in December of 2009.  Yes, the interview is over three years old and yes, he's added so much more since and will add even more to his biography for many years to come.  

But it is his quote about happiness here that really made me want to share this interview.  That and why I hope he never stops biting his nails.  :)

"Reporter - Diogo Morgado has, at nearly the age of 29 years old, a biography documentary [about him]. The eternal kid of “Amo-te Teresa” grew up, became a father and, in Christmas time, he tells us about his journey as an actor.

Reporter - Diogo, I’m sure that 14 years ago, when we first met, you never imagined that you would already have a biography documentary.

Diogo - No, I didn't imagine it, no. My first steps were as people know in the world of fashion, and that’s when we met… and after all the things and surprises I've had, it’s great... that a biography, a look at what I've done, happens at a time like this… it’s great.

Reporter – So, you've just become a dad. That's a great career! 

Diogo – Oh yes! I’m a dad and he’s healthy. That’s the role of my life! That’s the role of life!

Reporter – 14 years later, you still bite your nails!!?

Diogo – No, I don’t show it! No, I don’t show it (he hides his hands). This is my answer. Look! If I bite my nails, it’s because I get nervous. If I’m nervous, it’s because I want to do things well. So, on the day I stop biting my nails, it’s because I no longer care. And then, all things will become meaningless.

Reporter – Santiago (FYI his son, named after his character in “Vingança”) is your dream come true, for I remember that many years ago you already wanted to be a dad.

Diogo – He is, indeed! Happiness only makes sense when shared. And a child is not only someone with whom you can share happiness but also someone to whom you can pass on the importance of happiness and the path to achieved it. And, that is truly your place [in life].

Reporter – This Christmas will be different for you.

Diogo – Yeah! With one more family member, it has another meaning. It almost feels like Christmas when we were kids.

Reporter – 2009 was a great year for you. I wish you a great Christmas and an even better 2010.

Diogo – Me too, a happy Christmas and a huge kiss to everyone."
