Diogo Morgado and Pedro Morgado talk about "Malapata"

Diogo Morgado and Pedro Morgado, who co-wrote their upcoming film "Malapata," were recently on the "Germano Campos Entrevista" radio show on RDP Internancional to discuss the comedy, which Diogo also directed, and which will be released in theaters in Portugal on March 16th.  Luckily for us, host Germano Campos shared a video of the brothers' visit to his show, and even more luckily for us, our amazing friend Dina sent in a translation of the short but sweet video, posted just below.

Pedro Morgado (PM): One of the unforeseen events was Marco (Horácio)'s situation
Diogo Morgado (DM): Marco broke his ribs ...
PM: Doing justice to the name "Malapata" [loosely translated, it means "bad luck"] he broke his ribs. It was not purposeful, but ... it was “Malapata”. He was a brave man.
Germano Campos (GC): You see that in the movie?
BOTH: No, no.
DM: When the movie is already in theaters, let's release the video of what happened.
PM: It was a very complicated situation.
DM: One day! We only had one day to film in the theater. We had everything marked and organized. First scene, going down the stairs, Marco Horacio falls and breaks his ribs.  Goes to the hospital, and the whole morning went out to space.
PM: It wasn't any worse, because Marco was brave.
DM: A great professional.
PM: Bandaged up ... "the show must go on"... and we went back to the theater... I went to the hospital with him ...
DM: Did you see how he went in? Did you see how he went in?
(Both laugh.)
DM: Tell it. That [part]'s important... Marco, an absolutely incredible professional, he was all dressed up and made up as a woman, broke his ribs and what happens?
PM: This was a scene they were doing ... from ...
DM: Don't give away everything ...
PM: Then you say it...
DM: They are dressed as women, transvestites ...
PM: And it was precisely after they were properly made up ...
DM: False eyelashes ... Wigs ....
PM: That it happened, what happened. We called the paramedics and Marco Horacio was in those preparations (dressed/made up like a woman).
DM: The makeup artist even said "let's take it all off for you to go to the hospital" and Marco Horacio says "What? NO! Nothing is to be taken off because otherwise it will take much longer to do." "But Marco, you're all dressed up"... (Diogo imitates Marco's fake eyelashes, blinking)  And it was not Carnival ... "you're not going to the hospital like this." "I'm going, I do not want to know. Otherwise, when I come back, it's another hour to make me up again ... It can not be ... Magda (the makeup artist), did so much work here and I'm going to take this off? No way!! I'll go there (to the hospital), do what I have to do, have it checked out, and then come back again. "
PM: He still did not even know what he had on...
DM: A big hug to Marco, he was a giant. A giant indeed. This is just to show you what a difference it makes to work with a motivated team.

Diogo's video on "5 Para a Meia-Noite"

On Tuesday night, Rui Unas made his debut as one of the hosts of RTP's late night talk show, "5 Para a Meia-Noite."  Diogo sent Rui a video message to offer his good friend "encouragement" on his big night.  Our own good friend Dina, was once again kind enough to translate Diogo's message to Rui for us, which can be found right below the video.

Diogo recently attended the launch party in Portugal for Sony's new video game system, Playstation 4.  He was one of several Portuguese celebrities who were there and eager to try out the new PS4, including his friend and frequent co-star Rui Unas.

Behind the Scenes of "Sol de Inverno" with Diogo on "Boa Tarde"

Diogo took viewers on a tour behind the scenes of "Sol de Inverno" on the SIC talk show, "Boa Tarde."  Dina graciously translated this fun and cute segment for us, which can be found right below the video.

DM: (getting out of the car) Well good morning, good morning or good afternoon. This is because it’s a good day here in Óbidos. It's ... what time is it? Let me see ... It's 10am. It is not bad, but to get to Óbidos, have to wake up quite early. I woke up at 6:30 am. Oh… it is. There, at "Boa Tarde," you already had lunch, all is quiet, but here we're still starting the day now. Spend this day backstage at "Sol de Inverno" with me, okay? This is what we will do. So okay, come now.

DM: (next to the coffee machine) Go to the coffee ... Good day ...
DM: (as if he was selling it at the market) Look, a cup of coffee... Who wants a cup of coffee?... No coffee, but we have glasses...
DM: (drinking coffee) Here are the wardrobe ladies (they are hiding from the camera.) Look at them, you see?
(With Rui Unas ("Carlos") on the series.)
DM: Rui, do you want to talk to people about our latest single?
RU: Do you want to? Want to talk about it?
DM: I would speak a little ...
RU: So speak ...
DM: So this is how....
(and their  "Bo Tem Mel" video plays.)
RU: Although ... sometimes ...
DM: No, do not go there, do not go there ...
RU: So…
DM: No, it is not worth it because they do not need to know.

DM: But wasn't it cool?
RU: It was ...
DM: (to the camera) But prepare yourselves because there may be more (he laughs.)
(He closes the car door as colleagues run away from him and the camera.)
DM: I was being threatened by members of the crew, saying "Diogo, Diogo, I was born to be behind the camera, not in front of the cameras. Don't ever do that to me." Sorry wardrobe ladies.
(Now in the make-up trailer.)
DM: The last time I was here, on location, I was such a fuss, my colleagues, especially these two (the make-up people), turned. I think it was more "Eduardo" than Diogo.

DM: So look, I'm sorry. Jacinta, the makeup artist, she is disguising the fact that I have been very sick and filming at the same time ... Look, you know what she's doing right now? Hiding my dark circles.
(Inês Castelo Branco ("Teresa") arrives.)
DM: And then we have Inês Castelo Branco, who does not need much make-up to look pretty.

DM: A kidney is not something you give to just anyone (laughs.) What horror ... You see? I'm not like that, okay?
ICB: Diogo is animated. It is he who brings good energy to the scene. He is also a person full of interests. He is always talking about movies, experiences, music ...
DM: (interrupting) She's saying I'm boring ...
ICB: I’m not.
DM: Shut up.
ICB: He is very cool.

DM: Herein lays the magic of "Eduardo."
ICB: It is with these that he stays one of us. He was the only family member with dark eyes, so they decided to put him in contact lenses.
DM: I just said "no way I'm going to be the only member in this family who does not have lighter eyes, so to speak." So what did I do? I bought these (and he shows the box with the contact lens.
(with Maria João Luis ("Laura") and Rui Unas, getting ready to shoot a scene.)
MJL: Do you know who loves you?
DM: No one?
(He laughs.)
(Now talking to the director)
DM: I bring the small suitcase and he brings the big one.

DM: When people on the street tell me "You're so bad ... so bad ... but also… with a mother like that ..." so it's fun because people feel irritated with the character of "Eduardo" but also excuse him due to circumstances in which he lives.

DM: At the end of it all, "Eduardo" is not the villain, okay? Not a villain. He is someone not really capable, mindless, and perhaps abnormal. But that does not make him a villain. He is not a villain.

DM: Well, this is it, dear Conceição and dear viewers. Thank you for spending this day with me, for accompanying me behind the scenes of "Sol de Inverno." A Day with Diogo (from 2009)

The weather is good. We can say… Oooh… a truck! And that’s it. I passed the truck… with some efficiency… it must be said!

Diogo on "Entre Nós" -- Part Two

"Adelaide de Sousa/AS: Welcome back. We are with Diogo Morgado, one of the most successful Portuguese actors, who filmed recently in Los Angeles the sequel to “Born to Race.” But we will talk about that soon… I want to talk to you about theatre… You début in theatre with “Geração Out”…
DM: Yes, I débuted at Teatro Maria Matos, by the hand of Almeno Gonçalves. 
AS: That first impact with live theatre, I saw at the Biography Channel… it was agonizing for you….
DM: It was like… you’re at the back, just waiting to go on scene and you think, “I am not going to make it, it’s impossible for me to go in there…” There is nothing like that.  
AS: At Teatro Maria Matos, right?
DM: Maria Matos… a small theatre (sneering), and you just panic! Just a baby boy, 15 years old… not sure of anything… just jump there like a crazy, trust your instinct, and that’s how it was! Then… I did a piece of children's theater “A Canção dos Oceanos” in which I did a stuttering dolphin! And I can tell you that, doing that character for the first time I thought: “I want to be an actor”. It was like, “I think I am going to try this.” Because it had nothing to do with fame, I was doing a stuttering dolphin in auditoriums around the country, and in the end kids came to us and if I gave an autograph signed “Diogo” they said: “No… Dolphin! Who is Diogo?” and I said, “Ohh sorry…” and write Dolphin… That felt good, the kids laughing every time I s-s said a stutt- stuttered wo-word and I thought: man… I did this, I made this reaction…

AS: It gave you that pleasure of creation, you did something and the reaction was right there. 

DM: An honest, sincere and genuine response, from the kids! 

AS: Ricardo Pereira was here last week and he said the same… play for kids is most challenging work.  Who makes a research about you does not find just good things… 

DM: I believe so.

Today's film features Diogo playing a gay character.....  Say what??

Okay, keep calm, I’ll explain…

“O Crime do Padre Amaro" ("The Crime of Amaro, the Priest") is a 2005 Portuguese film directed by Carlos Coelho da Silva, adapted from the book of the same name written in 1875 by Eça de Queiroz. 

This film broke all box office records of Portuguese films in Portugal. It moves the setting from the book in the city of Leiria in 1875, to Lisbon in 2005, full of problems and socio-cultural marginalization. 

Amaro (Jorge Corrula) is a young priest, fresh out of the seminary, who comes to Lisbon replace a deceased priest. The young Amaro knows Amelia (Soraia Chaves), a young sensual and seductive girl, which causes the priest feelings never before experienced. Amaro does everything to resist the temptation, but Amelia does not give up. Can a man of God overcome this carnal desire?

And where does Diogo fit in to all of this?

In the movie, Diogo plays "Libaninho," and Rui Unas plays "Alex," a gay couple (and hairdressers!) who live near and become enchanted with their new priest, Amaro.

(Synopsis and Translation of "VIP Manicure" by Liliana):

Denise de Magalhães (Ana Bola) and Maria Delfina Caroço (Maria Rueff) are two "sculptors of nails", aka manicurists working in a shopping center pompously called Forum, in a suburb somewhere. Have a "corner of nails" under the stairs of the center, but Denise is very ambitious and has the dream of receiving VIP’s and treating their nails, which they ultimately achieve.  This series is a situation comedy.

Translating the lines:

Denise: Ohh Our Lady bless me.. Here comes Salazar!
Waitress: Aww this so bad that even Salazar will do…
Denise: It´s not that, girls! Salazar is coming here!
Waitress: Is he the one that’s going to substitute the other minister?
Denise: Girls, shut up and look!!!
(Maria Delfina starts running in slow motion towards Diogo…)
Maria Delfina: Awwww aww Salazar!! You’re as handsome in young as in old! Do it to me like you did on the movie! Take off my panties with your feet, and you don’t even need to take off your boots!
Waitress: She’s gone insane!
Diogo Morgado: I beg your pardon, not that I am not amused, but the truth is that my name is Diogo Morgado, Salazar was fictional character!
Denise: Yes he was, but ruled for 48 years, baby!
Maria Delfina: They call me Maria Delfine, Diogo Morgado!
Denise: Caroço! (means seed)
Diogo Morgado: Ohhh Caroço!
Maria Delfina: Yes, Caroço… do you like it?!
Diogo Morgado: Well the seeds, usually I spit! (all laughing). 
Maria Delfina: Awwww he splits the seeds!!!!
Denise: Maria Delfina, let go of Diogo!
Diogo Morgado: No, no… let her stay! I am enjoying it! Like this I can vary the landscape… Oh Jesus if Soraia Chaves sees this!
Maria Delfina: what do I have less than Soraia Chaves?
Diogo Morgado: Sooo … everything!
Denise: Well, let’s end up with this marmalade!!! Diogo, come with me please.
Diogo Morgado: Ok. But I wanted…. Ok, ok.
Denise: Sit here, sit here!
(The girls sit under and on top of him)
Diogo Morgado: Aww this is going well!! (Talks to the waitress) – You are very cute!
Maria Delfina: She??? Cute?? Fake nails!! Fake hair! Glued eyelashes! Cute?? She is just thin!
Waitress: At least I am not unbalanced! Will you give me your autograph, Diogo Morgado? 
Diogo Morgado: Yes, off course!
Waitress: Here you have a pen and paper.
Diogo Morgado: Wait a second, I am left handed.
Waitress: Write like this…
Diogo Morgado: What??
Waitress: “Diogo Morgado with much admiration for the lady Velvi”
Diogo Morgado: …. Lady Velvi, ok, done!
Waitress: Thank you! And look, how about a little kiss?
Diogo Morgado: I’ll give one or two!
Maria Delfina: No no no no… get out of here! 
Denise: (Loud!) Diogo!
Diogo Morgado: Yes ma’m!
Denise: What do you come here for? Don´t tell me you want to get gel nails?
Diogo Morgado: No. no… I don’t use… Speaking the truth I bite my nails! I come to make an appointment for my….
Denise: Girlfriend!
Maria Delfina: Then make him those nails that can scratch the backs! 
Denise: Ohhh Maria Delfina you are about to take a snap! Diogo Morgado is not your boyfriend!!
Denise: What is the name of your luckiest?
Diogo Morgado: No no no… is not for my girlfriend… It’s for my mom!
Denise: Aww so I can be your girlfriend, can I??
Diogo Morgado: Oh Oh… really!
(Denise calls the waitress to take Delfina out of there)
Denise: Give her 2 liters of linden tea, to see if it her calms down!
Denise: What a foolishness! What is this??
Diogo Morgado: Wwoooo she is very cute!!!!
Denise: Is she?? Why?
Diogo Morgado: Because she is wooofff… (explosive) Looks like that to me!
Denise: Cute… cute… I tell who is cute!...
Diogo Morgado: What, what…
Denise: Diogo… Did you ever had an experience with little bit older woman?
Diogo Morgado: Experiences I had, but not with older woman…

Trailer for "Break" -- A Film by Diogo Morgado

So today's "Clip of the Day" was actually inspired by yesterday's awesome guest "Throwback Thursday" posts by blog contributors @Celena229 and @Jodiedebb, who both featured projects where Diogo's co-star's was Lúcia Moniz.  Many of you commented here, via e-mail and with tweets about being fans of Lúcia, so I wanted to share with you another project she and Diogo collaborated on more recently.... a short film called "Break."

I say collaborated, because Diogo is not her co-star in "Break."  He is actually her director.  In fact, Diogo not only directed "Break," he also wrote it.  According to a tweet he posted in 2011, that's when Diogo began working on "Break," and it was his first time stepping behind the camera.  

Along with Lúcia Moniz, "Break" stars Diogo's good friend Rui Unas (who also co-starred with Diogo in the 2010 Spanish film, Miami Blue.)

Though "Break" has not debuted in its entirety yet, here's a trailer/teaser for this short film written and directed by Diogo:

In case you are wondering, Lúcia's line in the trailer is "what are you doing here?"  (Thank you, @MsLiliana.)

I have to say, as a lover of film, to me, Diogo is an impressive filmmaker.  He's really good at using imagery (and music/sounds) to create and tell a story.  I know, you all want to see him in front of the camera, but there's no reason he can't be a hyphenate, aka writer/director/actor and do both.  :) 

Not sure what the status is of "Break" in terms of completion or when/where it will air in full, but I will let you know if that changes.
